Day 6: Ponding

Activity Objectives

  • With a limited amount of sand, build a dam on a stream to impound the maximum volume of water.

Activity Instructions

Students will be given a limited amount of sand to build a damn on a stream to impound the maximum volume of water. They may use their hands or a sculpting knife to make dams or depressions in the landscape. The surface water area and impounded water volume will be projected as a changing bar chart next to the model. Students can achieve: (1) the best solution if a large volume of water is retained; (2) a good solution if a medium volume of water is retained; and a (3) bad solution if only a small volume of water is retained.
